Posture

Better posture that actually holds

You can't hold good posture by force. Lasting change comes from retraining the way you breathe, stand, and walk — so upright alignment becomes your body's default, not a pose you have to keep remembering.

Sound familiar?

Posture problems rarely show up on their own. Most people arrive with some mix of these:

  • Rounded shoulders or a forward-head "tech neck"
  • Persistent tension across the upper back and neck
  • You've been told to "sit up straight" — but it never sticks
  • A tight chest and shallow, high breathing
  • Low back that aches after standing a while
  • You don't love how you look hunched in photos

Why "sit up straight" doesn't work

Posture isn't a position you hold — it's the output of how you move all day. The way you breathe, how you load each leg when you stand, and the mechanics of every step you take are quietly setting the resting shape of your spine and shoulders.

That's why willpower fails. You can square your shoulders for a photo, but the moment your attention drifts, your body returns to the pattern it actually knows. Braces and one-off "posture exercises" have the same problem: they target the position, not the movement patterns underneath it.

Years of sitting, screen time, and repetitive one-sided habits gradually teach the body a slumped, compressed default. To change it for good, you have to teach a better one.

The Functional Patterns take: retrain the "big rocks" — breathing, standing, and walking — and posture reorganises itself around them. Strong, upright alignment stops being effort and starts being how you're built to stand.

How we'll work on it

Every plan is individual, but posture-focused coaching usually moves through four stages:

Assess

A full postural and gait analysis to see exactly where your alignment is drifting — and, more importantly, which movement patterns are driving it.

Release & reset

Targeted myofascial release to unwind the tight, overworked tissue holding you in a compressed shape, so better positions are actually available to you.

Retrain the pattern

Rebuild breathing, standing, and walking mechanics so the muscles that hold you upright learn to do their job — through real, integrated movement.

Reinforce in daily life

Simple, specific things to practise between sessions so your new default carries into work, workouts, and everyday standing and walking.
